Opera Makers International Women's Day Recital

The UK Premiere of La Montagne Noire by Augusta Holmès

On the 8th of March 2026 (International Women's Day) we will be presenting a concert performance of Augusta Holmès' only surviving opera, La Montagne Noire, in its UK premiere.

Composed in 1885, La Montagne Noire is a late-Romantic opera on a grand scale, replete with soaring melodies and moments of outstanding beauty. It is remarkable for being one of very few operas written by a woman to be produced at the Paris Opera during the 19th century. Despite the work's abundant merits, it received a lukewarm reception - likely due to the scant recognition afforded female composers at the time - and was never revived in France since its premiere in 1895.
